  • Staying Physically Healthy

It’s empowering and invigorating to be able to go out and play hockey, basketball, tennis, soccer, or just plain run around with your kids. It’s good for your health too. The time and effort you spend towards physical health pays many dividends. It results in better energy, and it can even transform your outlook on life! In any effort you make, you serve as a role model for your children.

Your actions are more powerful than you may realize. I was reminded of that this past week. We have a rule that sugary cereals are for the weekend. We call them "weekend cereals." In hindsight, I now realize that my four-year old has been paying close attention to how many grams of sugar are in the cereals. He would ask me, or his brother or sister. Soon, he not only knew how to read the grams of sugar, but also learned which cereals are "weekend cereals" and which are not based on the sugar content. This all became clear to me this past week when he pulled a box of cereal off of the shelf. I said, "You’ll need to pick another cereal, that’s "weekend cereal". He replied, "I can have it, it only has 11 grams of sugar."

Here's a website that can help you stick to your New Year's resolution, if you've made one, and help you make informed choices regarding yours and your family's health. Whether you’re looking to drop some pounds or you’re a marathon runner, you can gain great tips and guidance from this website: http://www.sparkpeople.com/

The website is free to join. You can connect with other people with similar goals. These goals may include improved nutrition, weight loss, and/or exercise. There are some great tools within the site. For example, if you want to lose ten pounds, you can plug in that goal and then use tools for tracking your food intake and exercise to work towards your goal in a healthy way.

SparkPeople sends useful articles via e-mail daily, and there are articles to browse through within the site. There is also a section on family fitness. The site includes some quizzes which are a fun way to test your knowledge on this topic and to guide you to where you want to go.

It’s not too late to get 2008 off to a healthy start for you and your family!

  • Resilience

Sometimes as well-meaning parents, we try to shield our children from pain. In fact, painful experiences are what make people stronger and more resilient. When a parent can allow a child to experience pain in a safe, supportive environment while providing tools and resources to handle the situation, he/she helps develop resilience in the child.

Tools include teaching kids how to manage their emotions and how to solve problems. We can feel good about our parenting when we give kids a head-start for navigating life's challenges.
