Tips

Nine times out of ten it seems that my five-year-old will not eat what we are having for dinner as a family. It is exhausting for me to have to make a separate meal for her! What do I do?

Some children are more picky than others, but you're right -- it's both exhausting and no fair to be a short-order cook for your child.

Here are some ideas to help you avoid this:

  • Work with your child’s tastes. If you're making something like a casserole or chili, it may work to separate out noodles and vegetables from the spices and onions or separate out the meat from the beans and serve these separately. Experiment with different textures and offer a variety of different foods to find some meals your child prefers.
  • Involve your child as you plan the meals for the week. Go through cookbooks and discuss choices. If your child is vested in the decision process, there's a higher likelihood of cooperation.
  • Stay consistent.  Serve meals and snacks around the same time each day. If you make clear that these are the times to eat, your child may be more likely to eat what you serve.
