ADHD

Introduction

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a condition that affects a person’s ability to sit still, focus and pay attention.

Experts estimate that 3-5% of the US population has ADHD – about 2 million people, or about 1 child in a class of 25.

You might believe this percentage runs higher because some children display temperamental traits common to ADHD characteristics. That doesn’t mean they actually have it.

The cause of ADHD is not clear. Research indicates:

  • Children with ADHD don’t make enough chemicals in key areas of the brain responsible for organizing thought;

  • ADHD appears to run in families, suggesting a genetic component;

  • There has been a slight correlation between very severe head injuries and ADHD.

The following do not cause ADHD:

  • Bad parenting;
  • Sugar intake;
  • Food;
  • Too much TV/video games.
