Anxiety and Stress

How Do I Know if My Child is Anxious?

Symptoms vary greatly and can be confused with something other than anxiety or stress.  Some symptoms of anxiety in children include:

  • Racing heart;
  • Stomachache;
  • Dizziness;
  • Sweating;
  • Crying;
  • Tantrums.

Anxiety also stems from fear. Some common fears that create anxiety in children include:

  1. School Fears
    • Fear of separation from parent or caregiver;
    • Fear of the bus;
    • Fear of places outside the classroom (restroom, cafeteria, etc.);
    • Speaking in front of the class;
    • Bullying situations.

  2. Fear of an Object or Situation
    • Animals;
    • Thunder;
    • The dark.

  3. Fear of Separation
    • Being alone;
    • Being at events where parents are not present.
