Introduction

What is communication? Is it simply messages we deliver and receive – or something more?

Communication is more complex than just words. People have their own points of view and value systems. Developmental level plays a role, as do gender and temperament.

All of us regularly encounter challenges in our relationships. As you read this material, think about the people you are closest to, and consider other relationships you observe.

Apply what you learn to your children. Remember: young children haven’t developed the skills to communicate their feelings – something that can contribute to their escalating out of control sometimes.
