  • Parenting With Love and Logic: Teaching Children Responsibility, by Foster W. Cline M.D. and Jim Fay.

    Dr. Cline is a child and adult psychiatrist, and Jim Fay is a school principal. They have coined the “Love and Logic” method of discipline. In teaching responsibility they discourage parents from being helicopter parents or drill sergeants and teach parents strategies to foster responsibility in their children.

  • Teaching Your Children Responsibility, Richard Eyre and Linda Eyre.

    The Eyres wrote the bestselling book, Teaching Your Children Values. They have appeared on various talk shows including Oprah and Phil Donahue. They have 9 children of their own. The Eyres identify twelve simple kinds of responsibility-from responsibility for things to responsibility for actions, from responsibility for choices to responsibility for younger siblings-that children can relate to. They use exercises and games to help teach these concepts to children.
  • Ready for Responsibility, Dr. Bob Barnes.

    Dr. Barnes is host of a weekly radio show, a newspaper columnist, and author. His acronym for creating responsibility is ICE which stands for Instruction (clearly telling children what is expected), Consequences (holding them responsible for their actions) and Experience (allowing children to have opportunities to be responsible).

    Childright and an authority on discipline and communication. She is also an internationally acclaimed speaker. She asserts in this book that responsibility is an integral part of self-esteem. We cannot hold ourselves in high regard if we don’t feel we are doing the right thing. Swift teaches parents how to teach their children to be responsible and to have character and integrity.

    Michele Borba has received the National Educator Award and is the author of several parenting books. She appears regularly on talk shows including the Today show and The View. One of the secrets in her book is a mother who cultivates self-reliance and independence. Borba illustrates this concept through a story and offers steps for fostering responsibility and handling mistakes.
