Understanding Temperaments

Strength-Based Approach

You’ll benefit from understanding your own temperamental traits as well as those of your children.

Understanding and appreciating the different ways people perceive and react to the world lays the foundation for connecting with your children and demonstrating acceptance. By understanding your child’s temperament, you can better understand how he feels and teach him how to express feelings in a healthy way.

The bonus? Healthy self-expression builds self-esteem.

You can develop parenting strategies that work well with your child’s temperament. You can also develop strategies to manage your own triggers so you can remain positive with your children.

Understanding how your child responds to various situations allows you to better prepare for challenging issues, and feel more effective as a parent. Feeling successful in your parenting builds your own self-esteem – and that’s just as important.

Understanding temperament can reduce a lot of pressure on everyone. Once you understand the basics, you’ll be relieved of trying to change your child or yourself. Instead, you can find ways to work together and enjoy each other more. You won’t need to worry so much about what’s “normal” for your child.
