My Parenting Compass

Sometimes we lose our way when driving in unfamiliar territory.

The same thing happens in parenting. As children move into new developmental stages or encounter new situations, and as family life ebbs and flows, you may find yourself asking, "Which way am I going?"

Your Parenting Compass Keeps You Moving in the Right Direction

My Parenting Compass serves as your parenting GPS (global positioning service) -- a powerful navigational tool to help you stay on course. Use your compass to chart your vision (your direction) for your child and yourself. It will remind you of your child's strengths (your guiding force) as you deal with the surprising and quirky situations parents face.

It's Easy to Add Little Things You Learn Along the Way

Create your Parenting Compass over time, like a scrapbook. Start by uploading your child's photo to greet you each time you visit.

As you add new insights, you'll have many opportunities for reflection.

  • Write down what works to help your child complete a task and manage his emotions. Reflect upon what motivates your child and what measures most effectively help him develop self-discipline.

  • Use the full page provided to list your child's artistic, mind, body, and heart strengths.

The Parenting Compass automatically creates a summary "snapshot" of your child to remind you, every time you click on the tool, of your most important insights. It's there to guide you in making those everyday -- and sometimes tough -- parenting decisions.

When to Use Your Parenting Compass

  • After a challenging situation to assess what helped and where you may have stumbled (but gained insights for the future).

  • To invent an action plan, based on your child's strengths. Finding what works to motivate her helps you reach your destination.

Need some extra help? Working with a Parent Coach can help you move your plan into high gear.

  • When something goes especially well! When you've successfully helped your child overcome a hurdle or she's achieved something significant, jot down a few notes about what made things click.

If you find you're drifting in the wrong direction, your Parenting Compass will help you correct course. You'll be able to keep the big picture in mind and parent intentionally.

Fill it out at your own pace and refer to it when you need help righting your parenting course. Consider it your parenting GPS!
